1. Truth Without Love is Harsh
Speaking the truth harshly is like throwing information at someone's face; it causes injury. Love allows the person to actually hear and receive the truth. "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is at the head, that is, Christ." (Ephesians 4:15) Don't just win the argument and lose the person. Use your words to heal the breach, not to widen the gap.
2. It Protects Your Credibility
A person who is angry and screaming is not really heard. When you remain calm and compassionate while speaking the hard truth, your character becomes your strongest argument. "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." (Colossians 4:6) Think of love as the seasoning on a meal. Truth is the main course, but love is what makes it palatable and digestible for the listener.
3. It Reflects the Heart of God
God never hits us with the truth to crush us; He uses it to set us free. When you speak the truth in love, you reflect our Father in heaven and the way He deals with us. "Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." (John 1:17) Jesus never sacrificed truth for grace, and He never sacrificed grace for truth. He kept them in perfect balance, and we should too.
